Thousands of species of reptiles live throughout the world, and many are threatened by habitat loss and extinction. National Reptile Awareness Day was launched to draw attention to these often-misunderstood animals. Falling on Oct. 21, the day offers an opportunity to spread the word about these remarkable creatures and how you can help them, both in the wild and as pets.
Among reptiles at risk of going extinct are six species of sea turtles, six species of crocodilians (such as the Chinese alligator), giant tortoises and various species of lizards and snakes. Protect reptiles in the wild by supporting legislation to protect their natural habitats, avoiding products made from snake or crocodile skins and joining a conservation group.
As pets, a wide array of snakes, turtles and lizards make good companions. While they don’t wag their tails in greeting or express their affection by licking your face, they are responsive to care and attention and provide enjoyable interactions.
Whether you’re a budding reptile enthusiast or an experienced handler, providing appropriate care for your reptile is crucial. These cold-blooded creatures are sensitive to the temperature and humidity of their environment. They are found on all continents except Antarctica, with their natural habitats ranging from deserts to tropical rainforests. Choosing the appropriate pet takes careful consideration. Some reptiles, such as popular bearded dragons, need special lighting for basking. Others risk burning themselves on heat sources. Some are relatively easy to care for and need feeding only once a week, while others require attention on a daily basis. Some require live food, and others eat vegetables. If you are considering adding a rad reptile to your family, take into consideration available space, cost of upkeep and the time needed to properly care for one of these amazing creatures to make sure you choose the right new family member.
Mistakes in husbandry are the primary cause of health issues in reptiles. We can help you keep your pet healthy. Celebrate Reptile Awareness Day by scheduling a preventive care exam for your cold-blooded friend.
