It’s the season of love when many pet parents will give and receive tokens of affection. But keep in mind that when new objects come into your home, they’re like curiosity magnets to your four-legged friend. Candy, flowers, balloons…you name it and chances are that your pet is going to feel the need to check it out. Oh, that it could be just a simple observation, but for many beloved furballs, examining the loot isn’t complete without touching, smelling or even tasting it. Unfortunately, this can lead to serious medical problems. Most people are aware that chocolate is toxic to pets, but many flowers and plants can be, too. And items like balloons or a pretty bow from a package can cause choking or other serious injury if swallowed. Make it a point to stash your gifts out of the reach of pets, preferably in a room they can’t access.
If you’re giving your furry friend a toy gift, choose options without small pieces or decorations that can be chewed up or swallowed. And if your pet has a habit of “unstuffing” stuffed animals, consider the stuffless variety to prevent the ingestion of filling material.
With some simple precautions you and your pet can enjoy a safe and splendid holiday full of affection.
