Pets play a significant role in our lives. They are often thought of as a family member, and we cherish the joy they bring us. That’s why it can be stressful when a human family member is allergic.
Allergies to pets can manifest as sneezing and coughing; an itchy, runny nose; itchy and watery eyes; and rashes or hives.
The allergen causing these reactions isn’t actually the pet’s hair, but the dander, or dead skin, they shed. The dander will be found wherever the pet goes.
Of course you want to keep your pet in your life, so what can you do? The first thing is to become a clean freak, and regularly get rid of as much dander as you can. Sweep and mop floors, vacuum carpets and rugs, and dust and vacuum furniture often. A vacuum with a HEPA filter is best.
You can make your home easier to clean by getting rid of carpet, rugs and drapes, and reducing the number of items that catch dust and dander.
Keeping your dog or cat out of the allergy sufferer’s bedroom will also help. Consider making other areas of your home pet-free, too.
Consult your physician about treatment options. Antihistamines, decongestants and nasal sprays are often used to minimize allergy symptoms. Allergy shots also work for some people.
