Few people can help but smile at scenes of a puppy or kitten waiting to be discovered by a new parent. Unfortunately, like many portrayals, this one isn’t rooted too firmly in reality. Special occasions, such as birthdays or graduations, can seem like a perfect time to bring a new pet into the household, and it can work out, but do yourself and the pet a favor and be sure that you or the other prospective pet parents are ready for the commitment that comes along with the new furry friend.
If a pet is on your gift list, please visit a local shelter before rushing to a pet store or breeder simply because there are so many wonderful dogs and cats who need loving homes. When visiting the shelter, try not to be fixated exclusively on puppies and kittens, as terrific pets come in all sizes, colors and ages. Think about the lifestyle of the pet parent-to-be. Are they up for the challenge of housetraining and other puppy shenanigans? Will a kitten be too much of an energetic force in an otherwise quiet life? If so, an older pet may be a perfect match instead!
Once the right pet is chosen, please introduce her to us as soon as possible. We’ll be excited to meet the new family member and examine her to ensure that she’s healthy. This is especially important if you will be adding a new pet to others already in the family. Whether your pet comes from a shelter, pet shop or breeder, it’s a good idea to confirm her good health before exposing your existing pets to their new sibling.
