National Dog Day is celebrated every Aug. 26 as a way to recognize dogs and all they do for us each and every day. From providing companionship in our family unit to working alongside law enforcement or as service dogs, dogs spend each day giving selflessly to us.
The day began in 2004 to help educate the public about the number of dogs who need rescue each year. It has been supported by many people across the United States, including former president George W. Bush, whose dog Barney has his own website.
The ways to celebrate National Dog Day are endless, but if you’re stumped for where to start here are some ideas:
– Donate blankets, food and toys to animal welfare organizations.
– Pamper your pooch with a massage or holistic spa treatment.
– Buy him a new dog toy — or five.
– Teach him a new trick for his ever-growing repertoire.
– Assist an ill or elderly neighbor by helping walk the dog.
– Volunteer at our local shelter and offer to walk dogs, clean cages or anything else they need help with.
One of the best ways to honor your dog is to help keep him in tip-top shape and health with regular preventive care exams.
Whether you celebrate National Dog Day every year or this will be your first time, it is a day to give back to our canine friends and show them their selfless contributions to our lives don’t go unnoticed.
