Do you have a rescued cat at home who fills your day with crazy antics and soft purrs? Or is your kitty more of the nap all day and don’t-touch-me-unless-I-tell-you-to variety? Regardless of your cat’s personality, if you rescued your cat from a shelter–and maybe even if you didn’t–chances are you don’t know exactly the date of her birth. And maybe you’d like to have an excuse to party? Certainly your cat would be open to the idea of a day dedicated to her! If that’s the case, you’re in luck! Declared by the North Shore Animal League to be the date reserved to celebrate cats whose birthdays are unknown, CATober the First is a purr-fectly wonderful reason to pamper your favorite feline.

While your cat may bristle at the thought of sharing a universal birthday (Shh! We won’t tell if you don’t!), she’s sure to appreciate your undivided attention–and a few treats, of course! In case you don’t know where to start, we’ve got a few ideas you can borrow.

Make your cat a “birthday cake.” Maybe you normally feed dry food because it’s easier. Give your cat a treat today and make her a “birthday cake” with that can of wet kitty food she’s been telling you is her preference.

Buy a new toy. Cats all have preferences. Whether your cat prefers catnip mice or feather wands, pick up a new favorite and schedule some playtime to enjoy it with your kitty.

Get her something cozy. While a sweater would probably be frowned on, your cat still likes to get cozy, especially as the weather starts to change. A new cuddler bed or blanket may be just the thing to make her curl up and purr.

Give her a good cuddle–but only if she wants it. For some cats, the greatest gift they can receive is some extra love and attention. A warm lap and a loving rubdown could be just the ticket.

However you choose to celebrate your cat on CATober the First, we wish you both many happy returns of the day!
