Since 2005, National Pet Day has been observed to celebrate the joy and companionship these special creatures bring to our lives, as well as to remind people everywhere of the millions of terrific pets in shelters who are just waiting for a loving, forever home.

Founded by pet advocate Colleen Paige, National Pet Day is a perfect opportunity to do something to help pets in need. Consider volunteering at a local shelter, or holding a supply drive among family members, friends and co-workers to collect food, toys or other supplies the shelter can use. Take advantage of available social media platforms to remind as many people as you can about the importance of shopping shelters first when they’re looking for a new pet. Also always promote the importance of having pets spayed or neutered to help reduce the shelter population.

Celebrate your own cherished critters by taking a longer-than-usual walk or incorporating extra playtime into the day. Buy or make them a special treat or safe toy. Take a photo of your celebration and use it to encourage others to do something special with their own pet pals.

No matter how you choose to celebrate, the important thing is to let your pet know he’s the bee’s knees in your book. Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to be part of the special relationship the two of you share.
